Leadership Spotlight: Charlie GadekenThis month, we continue our Leadership Spotlight by recognizing Charlie Gadeken for his service and celebrating the many ways he has helped shape Pacific Rim Sculptors. Charlie is an industrial artist whose monumental, interactive sculptures merge light, technology, engineering, and art to create immersive public experiences. Based in San Francisco, his work has been exhibited internationally and commissioned by cities, museums, festivals, and organizations including Burning Man, Coachella, the City of Palo Alto, and the City of San Francisco. Charlie brings a remarkable breadth of experience to both his artistic practice and his leadership. As the founder of The Box Shop, he created one of the Bay Area's most influential industrial arts communities, a collaborative workspace where artists share studios, tools, knowledge, and mentorship while producing ambitious public art projects. For more than two decades, The Box Shop has provided the resources, expertise, and creative environment that have enabled hundreds of artists to dream bigger, take creative risks, and realize projects that might otherwise have remained impossible. His commitment to fostering innovation and collaboration has left an enduring mark on the Bay Area arts community. Charlie served Pacific Rim Sculptors as a dedicated member of the Board of Directors and now continues his service on our Advisory Board. Throughout his years with PRS, he has generously shared his expertise, welcomed members into The Box Shop for board meetings and events, and offered thoughtful guidance as our organization has grown. His collaborative spirit, innovative thinking, and willingness to mentor fellow artists have strengthened our community in countless ways. I am especially grateful for Charlie's generosity, vision, and unwavering belief in the power of artists working together. Charlie's greatest legacy is not only the remarkable artworks he has created, but the creative ecosystem he built through The Box Shop: one that continues to inspire artists, foster collaboration, and strengthen our creative community. His leadership reminds us that great art is rarely created in isolation; rather, it flourishes through mentorship, shared knowledge, and a willingness to invest in others. We are honored to have his continued guidance as a member of our Advisory Board and look forward to the inspiration he will continue to bring to Pacific Rim Sculptors. With gratitude, Catherine Daley Board President Pacific Rim Sculptors

The sculpture consists of two stainless steel screens composed of over 1,000 hand-sanded tubes, arranged perpendicular to one another to gather, reflect, and release the desert's ever-changing light while casting slow, shifting shadows across the playa. Openings within the piece invite visitors to step into the "lacunae," the gaps completed through human presence, part of this year's "Axis Mundi" theme placing participants as the medium between earth and the celestial. Integrated solar lighting continues the sculpture's dialogue with the landscape after dark. Daley credits Charlie Gadeken for his mentorship and guidance throughout the project, and PRS Operations Manager Briona Hendren, who serves as Project Manager. Burning Man artist Kevin Clark is also supporting the project with transportation, installation, and deinstallation. Event Dates: August 30 - September 7, 2026
