Change the world with your art. -- PRS Newsletter Volunteers Welcome New PRS MembersSusana Arias of Santa Cruz, CA, describes her ceramic sculptures as primitive contemporary pieces that explore man’s attempt to control nature in an entropic world.
Tessie Barrera-Scharaga of San Jose, CA, trained at Mills College in Oakland, and at SJSU, San Jose, CA. She is a teaching artist at Community School of Music and Art, Triton Museum, Euphrates Museum, and San Jose Museum. She creates interdisciplinary mixed-media Installations using found objects, paper, fabric, wood, clay, steel, and soundtracks. She uses a variety of approaches to create the different elements of her installations, including welding, sewing, carpentry, and potter’s wheel.
Brad Burkhart of Santa Cruz, CA, trained at Kalamazoo College, Santa Cruz, CA. He works in ceramics, creating high-fire clay reliefs.
Kirk McNeill of Santa Cruz, CA, is interested in welding and creates metal and mechanical public pieces.
Cheryl Moreno of Aptos, CA, trained at Art Center College of Design, Santa Cruz. She creates small abstract and non-representational bas relief sculptures from found object and organic materials.
Ann Schnake of Berkeley, CA, trained at UC Berkeley and California College of the Arts. She is a social practice and visual artist who builds installations and sculptural works with a range of processes and using a wide spectrum of materials from conventional to unusual (currently exploring indigo, cotton, salt, sugar, silver, and gold in reference to capital and ecologic disaster). Her visual and performative works are exhibited locally and internationally in traditional art venues and also in unexpected locations. She also is ringleader of creative collective endeavors, including Dream Farm Commons, MobileInTent, Odd Sunday Dinners, and more. Although not primarily an educator she has directed public art programs, mentored young artists and students for decades, and periodically teaches individual classes at CCA and other arts forums.
Returning member Virginia Stearns of San Francisco, CA, trained at Vermont College. She is the EcoArt Project Director, Mission Creek, San Francisco. She uses a variety of media including wood, fabric, photography and mixed media to sculpt oversized ‘compost critters’ and marine invertebrates in velvets and satins, to create wood and photographic portrayals of trees, and to create mixed media altars honoring extinct life forms.
Lee Tavrow of Los Altos, CA, trained at MIT. He creates abstract, figurative, and kinetic works — often life-size or larger full human forms and busts — using found objects, wood, and stone.
Mary White of Berkeley, CA, trained at California College of the Arts with a BFA in ceramics and an MFA in glass. She creates Eco art and forms relating to environmental issues using ceramics, found objects, glass, light, mechanical forms, welded metal, water, drawing, photography, and film. She has served as Head of San Jose State University Glass Area in Spatial Arts, San Jose, CA, and as co-Head of the Glass Area at the Crucible, Oakland, CA. She was a 2009-2010 Fulbright Scholar at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, Ireland.

Curator Robert Melton, will continue to review PRS members' websites for on-going exhibition. He will identify these sites via the PRS website, so make sure your website listing and image content is up to date to take advantage of this unique, member-only opportunity! |

On Sunday June 12, 2022 PRS has a fundraising tour of the Oliver Ranch. For the uninitiated, this immersive experience is a "must-see" not-to-be-missed opportunity, as the Oliver Ranch has a two-year waitlist. (See: OliverRanchFoundation.org)
Located in the heart of Sonoma County, the Oliver Ranch is a picturesque 100-acre property, home to 18 remarkable site-specific installations by 20 award-winning artists spanning 35 years. Together these artists have transformed the ranch into a unique, one-of-a-kind outdoor museum that is harmonious with the surrounding environment.
This is a popular tour and will likely sell out.
The Oliver Ranch has strict rules, including restrictions about transportation. Registration is required. Watch for announcements with details about registration, donations, and transportation.

The Communications Committee is polling members to help guide PRS programming. The first poll asked members to identify the membership benefits they value most. PRS's Exhibitions ranked first, Newsletter second, Website third, and Events fourth.
Follow-up polls are going out to identify what members want most in each of these areas. The new poll about Exhibitions is now collecting ratings. Polls about the Newsletter and the Website will soon follow. Thank you to all members responding to the polls; the responses have been great and are very helpful.
The Communications Committee has its focus on the following areas, and we need member volunteers to help in each:
- Social Media Management
- Website Design and Management
- Photo, Video and Audio Production and Editing
- Writing and Editing — including promotional materials for attracting new members, promotion of exhibitions & events, newsletter, history of PRS, and other opportunities for publicizing PRS's activities and members.

Member News: Nancy Brown
Nancy Brown, approaching "Semaphore" on West Juana Boulevard from the San Leandro BART station Nancy Brown received a grant for her outdoor public art installation “Semaphore”, which creates an unexpected oasis of color, movement and beauty in downtown San Leandro. The installation includes thousands of vivid utility marker flags, which reference visual communication, material culture, and the making of meaning. Conceived early in the pandemic as safe way to enjoy art, these outdoor flag installations have become a way to engage the community and explore perception. Viewers share their experience of the work with the artist, when she is on-site mid-day every Wednesday, or 24/7 via a QR code visible at the site. "Semaphore" was recently featured on the cover of the San Leandro Times. The project was funded by a San Leandro Arts Commission Arts & Culture Grant, San Leandro, California. Marina Smelik has works in the 61st Stockton Art League Juried Exhibition at the Haggin Museum, Stockton, CA. Originally conceived in 1951 to recognize, promote and reward excellence in Northern California art, the exhibition has since grown to be a national juried competition exhibiting 2D and 3D artworks at the Haggin Museum, and is a major fundraiser for the Stockton Art League, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, which provides art education and development of the visual arts for all ages in Stockton and San Joaquin County. Juror for the exhibition was Ann M. Jastrab (Executive Director at the Center for Photographic Art in Carmel, California), Cuong Nguyen (professional painter and art teacher based in San Jose, California), and Ruth Santee (California based artist, curator, gallerist and tenured professor). Susannah Israel has works in The HOME Exhibit, a group exhibition at the Healdsburg Center for the Arts which, after twenty years of serving the community on Plaza Street, has relocated to its new home at 334 Center Street, Healdsburg, CA. This transition inspired the show's idea of exploring the concept of home, reflecting on change, and longing for stability. The juror for the exhibition was Paul Mahder, Fine Art Photographer and Director of Paul Mahder Gallery in Healdsburg, which represents local and international artists in all media.
