COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE

Contact:  Communications@PacificRimSculptors.org

The Communications Committee made up of Chair, Jane Ingram Allen, Jeff Key, Charles Stinson, Lynne Todaro and Richard Alpert and Briona Hendren continues to meet via Zoom, usually on the last Monday of the month at 10:30 am.  The committee welcomes participation from other PRS members: please contact Jane at info@janeingramallen.com if you would like to help with the newsletter, website, social media and other ways the group members communicate with each other and with the world.  We are considering starting a Podcast for interview with sculptors; thanks to Richard Alpert for initiating this, and we look forward to hearing the sample interview he has in progress.  We need people to volunteer to help with the Podcasts.  We are also looking for people to help with social media posts and writing articles for the newsletter about sculpture and things of interest to members. The next meeting of the Communications Committee will be April 24 at 10:30 am.  Please contact Jane if you would like to get the Zoom invitation to attend.

Thank you to all,

PRS members are encouraged to tour SFMOMA on the second Thursday of each month. If you want to meet other PRS members, we suggest you gather at 4:30 PM on the second floor at the large stairway leading up to the third floor. This is a recurring, informal event; you are welcome to start earlier, or later, and perhaps to check out other nearby exhibitions or dining opportunities.

Is social media a mystery to you, or do you want to use it better to promote your art? Watch for an upcoming live Zoom event on Social Media for PRS members.

MEMBER NEWS

susannah israel

Susannah Israel will be the Inaugural Artist in Residence at Oregon Coast School of Art, in April 2023. She will spend the month next to the Umpqua River in Gardiner, Oregon, exploring and making work in response to her surroundings. Of particular interest to the artist is the stark contrast between her home in post-industrial east Oakland and the small community of Gardner (population 50), which she expects will offer new direction and ideas for her work. Director Emily Free Wilson and Susannah Israel met at Archie Bray in the summer of 2002 and have maintained ties across decades. They will celebrate being back in the studio together with a free workshop "Wild & Free" offered to the community April 15-16th. The workshop will emphasize collaboration and creative exchange. jane ingram allen

Jane Ingram Allen received an Educator Grant from the Surface Design Association to help with making new equipment for teaching workshops in papermaking art, and in particular to make a large size papermaking mold and deckle for teaching her workshops at Sitka Center for Art & Ecology, August 5-6, 2023, in Oregon. The papermaking equipment will be constructed by Jane to fit into a normal car so she can use it for other workshops teaching how to make really BIG handmade paper. charles H. stinson

Two of Charles Stinson's bronze sculptures will be in the show Third Generation: The Bay Area Figurative Movement Today, co-curated by Susan R. Kirshenbaum and Catherine Merrill. The curators state,

The Bay Area Figurative Movement never died and continues to thrive. San Francisco Bay Area artists and models founded the Models Guild in 1946, and it’s no wonder that we still have such a healthy, lively community, chock-full of dedicated talent. Some of us even flourished during COVID and sheltering-in-place, as we continued drawing, painting, and sculpting on Zoom sessions around the world. What does our figurative community look like? We are artists and models; teachers and students; our styles are anywhere from classical to pop; our techniques are everything from digital to hand-ground pigments; and our community encompasses the very experienced and the relatively new to exhibiting. This exhibition explores a full range of styles and approaches combined with skill and craft.

Also in the show are works by Joseph Abbati, Jane Fisher, Madelyn Covey, Susan R. Kirshenbaum, Catherine Merrill, Diane Olivier, Fernando Reyes, Randall Sexton, and May Shei. The exhibition opens April 4 and continues through 26, 2023, at The San Francisco Women Artists Gallery, San Francisco, CA. Opening Reception is 2-4 PM Saturday, April 8, 2023. Charles adds, "Remember what you were doing when the Covid shutdown was announced? I had just finished installing pieces in the Mission College Vargus Gallery show Bamboo & Haiku, curated by Dotti Cichone. The opening reception was cancelled and gallery doors were locked with the pieces inside for a year. A new article describes the show and photos from the exhibition are at this link, including my "Device for Splitting Particles", which is featured as the header image."
