PRS NEWSLETTER

OCTOBER 1, 2019

From the Editor

Autumn arrives with its shorter, cooler days.

Several members will be attending the ISC conference in Portland; watch for news in the next newsletter (You can still attend; see sculpture.org/portland19 ). If you are going, email Catherine Daley to let her know (cmdaleyphoto@hotmail.com) so she can coordinate gatherings of PRS members with members of other ISC chapters.

Now let's change the world for better through our art!

Best regards,

PRS Newsletter Staff

Marin County:

Peter Keresztury has organized an exhibition of works by Pacific Rim Sculptors at the October 18-20, 2019 Bioneers 30th annual conference at the Marin Center Fairgrounds in San Rafael (see www.bioneers.org). Tickets are required to attend the conference, but the exhibition is open to the public.

Some space is still available if you want to participate. Send Peter photographs of some of your sculptures as soon as possible; include titles, dates, prices, & brief descriptions. Peter's email is PeterKer@Pacbell.net

Artists will install their sculptures Thursday, October 17, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, and de-install on Sunday, October 20, after 6:00 PM. Security is on-site 24-hours, but artists need to insure their own works, if desired. Large sculptures are preferred. Artworks will be displayed outdoors in one area of the fairgrounds. Artists need to supply their own pedestals.

Each exhibiting sculptor will receive 2 free tickets to the conference, plus a payment for participation.

Peter will work with the Bioneers to allow PRS a table and chairs to provide information and to handle all sales, of which the artists will receive 100%. Two PRS participant volunteers need to be available at the table on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday; some payment may be possible.  Congratulations & thank you to Peter!

SPECIAL:  PRS SECOND SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT

The PRS Events Committee (Leith Thrall, chair; Eileen Fitz-Faulkner, co-chair) schedules studio visits and similar activities, rotating among PRS's several areas. For more information or to schedule a Second Sunday visit to your studio email events@pacificrimsculptors.org

SEPTEMBER SPOTLIGHT:

Thank you to Catherine Merrill for hosting the September PRS Second Sunday Spotlight to her delightful, art-filled San Francisco home, studio and garden.

Participants visited Catherine's downstairs ceramic studio, equipped with potters wheels and two kilns large enough to fire large sculptures & vases.

Immediately adjacent is a figure drawing & sculpting studio, where Catherine hosts an on-going monthly small group of sculptors, who share model fees.

(continued)

Immediately outside the bright studio is Catherine's sunny garden, where attendees saw several of her outdoor sculptures, including Language of Flowers, plus wall pieces and platters mounted on the garden fence.

Catherine's work celebrates the human figure, and is strongly influenced by her many years as a modern dancer, using the body as an instrument for expressing emotions and ideas.

During the potluck Catherine showed and talked about several of her works, plus examples from her extensive collection of works by some of Cuba’s most prominent artists.

NEXT SPOTLIGHT:

So much is going on in October! Many PRS members will be attending the ISC conference in Portland, OR, and it is the month of Fall Open Studios. So instead of the usual Second Sunday studio visit, PRS members are invited to participate in any or all of the following:

IMAGES FOR THE PRS BROCHURE

Forty-two PRS members submitted over 80 images to be considered for a PRS promotional brochure.

The quality of works impressed the panel of seven jurors, who found the selection process enormously challenging. The jurors recommended that the PRS Board approve preparation of multiple versions of the brochure so to present a wider view of the professional quality of PRS members' works.

Congratulations to the selected artists:

(continued)

PDF copies of the brochures are available on the PRS website so you can print them or link to them in emails to your collectors (note these are designed to fold in thirds):

The PRS Board hopes to repeat this competition annually, so start planning your next submissions!

(Note:  A few submitted photographs did not meet the submission requirements or were of low visual quality, so could not be considered. It is worth hiring a skilled photographer to present your works with the professionalism they deserve. Your sculpture may be excellent, but poor photographs just don't communicate to jurors. And even if the jurors think the piece looks great, a low-resolution photograph quality may be unusable for printed reproduction.

Check out discussions about photography in the PRS professional discussion forum.

MEMORIAL FOR PATRICIA BENGTSON-JONES

Sunday September 22 was a gorgeous but bittersweet day with a memorial for long-time PRS member Patricia Bengtson-Jones, organized by Judith Blankman and Rene Dayan Whitehead, and hosted by early PRS member Kati Casida in her beautiful, art-filled home. Many early and long-time PRS members attended and enjoyed reconnecting with conversations over a potluck spread.

Judith Blankman led the group in sharing memories, including a quote from Patricia: "It's not what you make, but why you wanted to make it." Patricia was fondly remembered as a member of the Breakfast Group, the Nordic Five, and The Farm Gallery. All recalled her distinctive laugh, her sense of humor, and her always generous, helpful, positive, and supportive nature.

Attendees included long-time PRS participants Hawley Holmes and host Kati Casida (below left), Al Honig and Rene Dayan Whitehead (below right),

Gene Erickson and Roger Smith (below left), Susan Peterson and Leitha Thrall (below right).

Although Patricia is dearly missed, the influence of her caring nature lives on.
